CORPUS CHRISTI - Ever hear of an 11-year-old girl who would rather examine bugs and plants with her granddaddy than learn about being a girl?

Former practicing attorney, current practicing physician and author, Jacqueline Kelly reads from and discusses her debut tween novel, The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate, at Janet F. Harte Public Library, 2629 Waldron Road, Sunday, December 6, 2009 at 3 p.m.

From Publishers Weekly and School Library Journal:

Life at the turn of the 20th century is not easy for a girl who loves books and science. Kelly's first novel presents spirited heroine Calpurnia (Callie Vee) Virginia Tate, a middle child with six brothers, growing up in the isolation of Fentress, Texas, in 1899. To her family's dismay, Callie is stubborn, independent and not interested in darning socks or perfecting her baking skills like a lady. "I would live my life in a tower of books," she thinks to herself.

Callie Vee's observations of two grasshoppers leads her to approach her reclusive, science-minded granddaddy. Together they embark on remarkable adventures, shirking gender roles and other preconceived notions.
