CORPUS CHRISTI - Carson Bashaw and his dog Gus were duck hunting in the Calle Del Oso just off Hans Suter Park this morning. And they got one.
But when they were done, two CCPD officers were waiting for them. Lieutenant J.C. Hopper explained to Bashaw, "This entire body of water, the Calle del Oso, is inside the city limits of Corpus Christi. Ok. And we have an ordinance that prohibits the discharge of firearms inside our city limits."
Hooper told us later he checked with Development Services about that ordinance. And he's right. But Ordinance 33-75 goes on to say 'water fowl' hunting is permitted, in season, in Corpus Christi Bay, Nueces Bay, and the Upper Laguna Madre. The location where Bashaw was hunting is not one of those areas.
"There was one little spot right in the middle of the bay, just the island, that was legal," Bashaw told the officers. "And nothing else around here? And you're saying that was the island you were hunting on?" Hooper asked. "Yes sir," Bashaw replied.
The ordinance also says you can't duck hunt within one thousand feet of a residence, commercial property, or school. Bashaw was close to those types of locations.
