CORPUS CHRISTI -- Hundreds of people gathered tonight at the corner of Ayers and Brownlee to say their goodbyes to a man they all considered a friend. Benjamin Mustafa was gunned down inside his store on Monday.
Friends, relatives, and loyal customers went to the store Mustafa owned and ran Wednesday night to share stories about their good friend.
One man in attendance says he had lunch with Ben each week and he shared a picture of him celebrating Mustafa's 59th birthday just last month.
Many people at the vigil shared memories about the man they all described as kind and generous. They talked about him becoming an American citizen and how proud he was of this country. Several law enforcement officers also attended, they said Ben always took care of them, which made their search for the suspects that much more intense.
"Law enforcement, we'd come into the store get something to eat, something to drink and just chat with him, but he'd never let you put your hand in your pocket to pay just really standup guy, recalled Corpus Christi Police Officer Eusabio Cano.
Constable Steve Rosas says on Monday officers must have stopped dozens of red 4 door cars searching for the killers. "It hit very close to home and took a lot out of us to do our job knowing our friend was in bad shape, obviously didn't make it."
The size and diversity of the crowd made it obvious Ben touched many lives, from law enforcement to people who went to his store, many said they liked talking to Mustafa for encouragement.
