CORPUS CHRISTI - The Joe Salem Thanksgiving Dinner is an annual tradition for people here in Corpus Christi.
This year was the 66th annual event which fed over 1,000 people. Hundreds of people lined up since 8 a.m. to make sure they had a bite to eat.
Over 300 volunteers put up decorations and cooked all night to prepare for Thursday's event.
Last year the lunch served over 700 people, and this year the Boys and Girls Club broke that record by feeding over 1,500 people.
" When he was a little boy, he would get the neighborhood paper boys and he gets steaks from his daddy's grocery store and take them to the Success Café and have them cook them up for the paper boys, " said Chris Salem-Carr, Joe Salem's daughter.
Now hundreds of people are able to have a thanksgiving meal thanks to her father, Joe Salem.
"He had a giving heart and that's the way he was raised and that's how he raised us," said Carr.
The 750 turkey legs that were cooked Friday were a big hit.
It was a hit not only for adults but kids, including Salem's grandson.
"I'm glad that he started this because I'd just stay home and really wouldn't have anything to do, it would be a normal thanksgiving, but he started this. We come over here and help out with everybody here," said Dylan Salem.
"This is a happy day and we are going to share what we have and be happy for happy thanksgiving," said Carr.
