CORPUS CHRISTI - It took less than an hour for a federal jury in Corpus Christi to convict a man of human smuggling charges this morning.
47-year-old Jose Gallegos was arrested in August at the Sarita checkpoint. He was caught with a nearly naked 18-year-old Mexican citizen.
During his trial the young girl tearfully testified that Gallegos had sexually assaulted her and forced her to wear revealing clothing and get facial piercings.
She also testified that Gallegos had threatened to kill her if she told anyone. According to a release, he was taking the girl to New Jersey.
Prosecutors say Gallegos kept several people against their will at a motel in Palmview.
He faces up to five years in prison.
