CALALLEN - The Cats kicked off two-a-days just like they do every year - with circuit training. It's a grueling test of speed, agility and stamina - and the Cats say it makes them better.
Coach Phil Danaher returns a total of 11 starters from a team that finished 9-3 a year ago, and a tough loss in the area round of the playoffs.
"These seniors have really come back and rededicated themselves and refocused," Danaher said. "They've gotten the younger ones, and that's what you need in senior leadership."
"Everyone wants to win here," senior linebacker Kade Young said. "Its not just one particular game. We lost quite a few last year we want to revenge all of our losses and hopefully not have one of those losses this year."
Calallen is ranked 19th in Dave Campbell Magazine's preseason 4A poll. But that's not something that the Cats are thinking about.
"That's off reputation more than anything else," Danaher said. "One thing we really have to battle here is complacency because 28 years we've made the playoffs. These kids weren't even born."
"Doesn't really mean a lot to us," Young said. "We were picked to win state by that same magazine and we all know how that turned out so everything would be great on paper but the game is not played on paper and sometimes that works in our favor."
Dave Campbell's 30-4A Rankings:
4. Victoria East
5. Victoria West
