BISHOP - The Badgers are picked to finish last in District 16-2A DI, and that has them fired up.
"Knowing that we're picked last is the biggest motivation ever because we know that we shouldn't be picked last," running back Nate Gant said. "We know that we're a way better team than that. We're just going to come out and shock South Texas."
It is a tough district - with the likes of Aransas Pass, San Diego and Odem - but the Badgers feel like Dave Campbell's Magazine is underestimating their talent; especially at the skill positions. Coach George Luna returns eight starters on offense, and a new(old)-comer at QB in Dillan Gonzales, who returned to Bishop after spending last season at a different school.
The question mark for the Badgers - Coach Luna admitted - is on the offensive and defensive lines. But another veteran returner is convinced all the hard work will pay off.
"We've worked hard all offseason and hopefully this season is going to be good for us," wide receiver Jamin Lira said. "We're coming in here a lot stronger than last year and hopefully this is the year we can do something that has never happened in Bishop before."
To do that - the Badgers will have to get through a tough district schedule where they struggled last season - posting a 1-5 record.
"It is a tough district, but on the other hand - I talked to the kids about this - there are three schools that have different head football coaches so there schemes are going to change a little," Luna said.
