CORPUS CHRISTI - This is the Warriors year. At least that's what they're saying at Annapolis Christian Academy. A big group of the Warriors team has been together since eighth grade, and they're looking to build on last year's success.
"This group right here, I'll tell you - they were talented as eighth graders, a junior high team - they were solid," Coach Robert Schmidt said. "Junior level now - they started as a freshman squad so they've seen the varsity level for the past three years. They got to the region semi-final level last year so they definitely know how to compete. They are definitely a good group."
The Warriors return five starters on both sides of the ball, but did lose on of their biggest pieces from last season. Quarterback Andrew Hanks' family moved to Alaska. But with plenty of playmakers returning, the Warriors are poised to capture their second-straight district title.
"Most of the players have been here for at least three years and we've really learned the 6-man game and we really have our technique down," defensive end Matthew Bowden said.
Annapolis Christian made some noise in the playoffs last season, advancing to the Region Semi-Finals, and they think they can go even farther this season. And they're having some fun along the way.
"It's quite a bit of fun, especially for me as a running back," Colton Garrett said. "It's quite a bit of running, six guys on the field and there's a lot of open room so as soon as you find that hole, you've got the whole field to work with."
