MATHIS - The Mathis Pirates have had plenty of recent success in Class 3A, but this year the group has dropped to Class 2A, joining up with District 16-2A-D1.
Head Coach Ronnie Molina returns just a handful of starters from a team that finished 7-3 in 2011 but missed out on the postseason. And while they have yet to play a game in their new district, critics have already called them favorites, but the team has yet to let it go to their heads.
"Our district people say it's easy but going down to 2A is just like having Sinton, Ingleside and everyone else," said RJ Contreras.
Anderson Rubio, the team's standout wide out has moved over to quarterback and does have some weapons at his disposal, but just because they dropped to 2A doesn't mean anything will be a cake walk.
"Anything can happen; the guys out there want it just as bad as we do. San Diego, AP, and Odem.. They all want it, they are not going to give it away. The best team is going to get it," said Rubio.
