HS Football Preview: John Paul II Centurions

CORPUS CHRISTI - The Centurions made a name for themselves last season with an 8-3 record and a district title. John Paul II will be looking to do the same this coming season, but it won't be easy. Dave Campbell's Texas High School football magazine has John Paul II slotted to finish fifth out of six teams in private schools DI district 2.
"It's definitely going to be a challenge but, like I said, we've been training hard all summer, going through all the workouts, we're pretty strong this year," lineman JB Ayala said.
Coach Frank Bacy returns 12 starters from last year's squad, including Nick Villalobos who will be taking snaps under center. Villalobos was an all-state safety last season, racking up seven interceptions, but will now have an expanded roll as a senior.
"We got a great coaching staff and we all trust each other, so we're going to do good out there," Villalobos said. "We don't really try to look forward to the future we're just trying to take it game by game."
Senior Zach Gatlin will also take on an expanded roll. Gatlin moves from slot receiver, where he caught five touchdown passes last year, to running back.
"It's going to take a lot of work but we've got speed, size, have a lot of returning starters and everything so we're going to get out there and give it our best," Gatlin said.
