House Panel Considers Impeachment Charges for Hall

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - A Texas House panel has already decided there are grounds to impeach University of Texas System Regent Wallace Hall.

Lawmakers must now decide whether to pursue formal charges that could lead to Hall being forced from office.

The Select Committee on Transparency in State Agency Operations meets Wednesday in Austin to consider approval of formal articles of impeachment. Hall has been accused of abusing the powers of his office and possibly breaking student privacy laws in his efforts to oust Austin campus President Bill Powers.

Hall has refused calls for his resignation and also faces a separate criminal investigation. He denies breaking the law.

If approved by the panel, impeachment charges would go to the full House. If approved there, the Senate would conduct a trial.
