PROGRESO - A horse has died after getting stuck in an open-top irrigation pipe near a South Texas canal.
KRGV-TV reports emergency personnel worked several hours Saturday night at the site near Progreso to free the animal. The horse named Morro was trapped up to its neck. The horse died after being extricated from the 3-foot-wide pipe.
Horse wrangler Teo Martinez says the animal apparently suffocated.
Norberto Rangel of Progreso bought Morro as a therapy animal for his nephew who has autism. Rangel was with the animal when the horse fell into the pipe opening that was covered by brush.
Rangel says he's concerned because children also play in the area.
Officials covered the opening to the pipe following the accident. Authorities are trying to determine who owns the irrigation pipe.
