ROBSTOWN - We caught up with some kids at the horse competition today at the Junior Livestock Show in Robstown. The kids go through a lot of training with their animals but when it comes down to it, the relationship with the horse seems to be the most important.

It may look easy as a spectator watching a the Junior Livestock Open Train Contest but any competitor could tell you that what looks easy not always is.

"It's very challenging to make it look good and make it look easy," said Brittany Donald, a first place rider. "It's challenging to get up to the poles right and to have the horse look good and a lot of the stuff can look scary to horses."

Kids of all ages entered today's challenge and the competition wasn't about speed...in this round judges were more or less looking for precision.

"He's looking for the confirmation of the animal and the ability of the child to handle that animal and put it in specific positions and all," said John Freeman, a volunteer.

Kids had the challenge of guiding their horses through a variety of obstacles, gates and ramps in hopes that all their training could help them take home the top spot.

Donald said, "I think trail is one of the most difficult events. It involves a lot of help from the rider and a lot of talent from the horse."

While all the participants undoubtedly put in the time training with their horse in the end it's confidence and the bond riders have with their animal that'll get them through.

"As long as you have a good relationship with your horse you can get through most of the obstacles," said Claire Walsh, first place rider in the junior trail competition. "I had a little trouble with the gate but we always get through it."
