With nearly 6,000 total yards and 48 points per game on their resume, the Lake Travis Cavaliers are an offensive machine.
But 43 is the number the Flour Bluff Hornets would like to keep them from adding to Saturday at the Alamodome. That's how many games the Cavaliers have won in a row, dating back to early September, 2007.
"If we win, it's going to be a major upset," said Hornets running back Orelando Pratt. "It's going to make history if we beat them. They've beaten 40-plus teams in a row, so it would be nice to beat them."
Based on that long winning streak, Flour Bluff Head Coach Darrell Andrus understands if the casual fan doesn't give his team much of a chance.
"I don't blame them," he said. "I think Lake Travis has put themselves in that position. But my team believes in themselves and our staff believes in our team and I know our community does. Why else do you play the game? I think you've got to respect what they've done, but I think you've got to kind of respect what we've done. We've won 11-straight and it's two good football teams. Hopefully, we can come away with a win."
It's not like Flour Bluff doesn't have firepower of their own. The Hornets average 40 points per game, 46.5 in two playoff victories over Mission Veterans Memorial and San Antonio Harlandale. Their 410-yard postseason average will likely need to hold up for Andrus' team to move on.
"Every possession is crucial, every one," said Hornets quarterback Jackson Bonnette. "We've gotta take some time off the clock and keep the ball off their number one offense and keep moving it and score when we can. Get in the red zone, gotta come through."
"Lake Travis is number one in the state and they deserve that because they're a really good team," said receiver Tyler Kroll. We can play with them and match up with them. Whoever doesn't think we're going to win, we're just going to give them a good game and we're going to try our best."
"One game and we go up there playing the two-time defending state champions, but to me none of that matters right now," Andrus said. This is Saturday at the (Alamo)dome, winner goes on and loser is going to basketball season."
