CORPUS CHRISTI - The Flour Bluff Volleyball team is beginning to turn some heads after winning 21 of their first 26 games. The (21-5) Lady Hornets are already out to 4-0 district start, with Ray next on the schedule.
"At the beginning of the season nobody thought we were a threat but now I hope they see us more as a threat," said Amanda Almond.
Their theme for the year is, "Going for the Gold, lighting the fire within." It's an Olympic theme, and basically means for each girl to give it her all.
Leading the way for Head Coach Kara Wallace is Junior Middle Blocker Shelby Harper, who has already verbally committed to play college volleyball for Arkansas.
"I just go out and play and try not to pay attention to anything and just play," said Harper.
The 6'2" standout leads the Bluff in most statistical categories including Kills (124) and Blocks (22).
"She is definitely the hitter that we go to when we are struggling and need to get the ball back and serve," said Almond.
"She is a great offensive player and middle blocker," added Johnstone.
If you have followed Flour Bluff athletics over the past few years you may recognize her last name, as Shelby's big brother is Christian Harper, a former Hornet Football Player who now suits up for the University of Mary-Hardin Baylor.
"We just motivate each other, even if it was a bad day we keep playing because we love it and we help and push each other in that way," said Harper.
It's important to point out that Harper doesn't succeed alone, her team is full of talent all rising up night in and night out. Brooke Luby, Amanda Almond, and Katie Johnstone have all been big time contributors.
Next up for the Lady Hornets is Ray on Friday Night.
