CORPUS CHRISTI - David Martinez tossed five shutout innings and Max Stassi hit a two-run home run in his first at-bat of the season to lead the Hooks over the Midland RockHounds 6-1 Thursday night in front of 4,280 fans on a chilly night at Whataburger Field.
Midland starter Arnold Leon (1-2) started the bottom of the first inning by plunking Hooks' leadoff hitter Austin Wates, who reached base four times and swiped two bases. Ben Orloff attempted to bunt Wates over and ended up on first base thanks to a throwing error. After George Springer's fielder's choice put runners on first and third, Corpus Christi executed a double steal to go up 1-0.
J.D. Martinez bounced out and Domingo Santana followed with a single to score Springer. Stassi, who joined the Hooks Wednesday from extended spring training, homered in his Double-A debut to clear the bases and put the Hooks in front 4-0.
The Hooks' bats struck again in the fourth against the third pitcher of the night for Midland, Sean Murphy. Jiovanni Mier and Wates led off the inning with consecutive singles before Orloff bunted them over. Springer singled home Mier and a groundout by Martinez plated Wates to make it 6-0 Hooks.
Meanwhile Corpus Christi (16-11) starting pitcher David Martinez (3-0) cruised through five innings, allowing just five singles to go with a pair of strikeouts. Jorge De Leon followed Martinez on the hill and earned a four-inning save, his first of the season.
The RockHounds (13-14) scored their run in the seventh. Catcher David Freitas and center fielder D'Arby Myers hit back-to-back singles with one out and a Jake Goebbert single plated Freitas to make the score 6-1.
Corpus Christi and Midland play the final game of the series and the homestand Friday at 7:05.
