Hooks Still Perfect in July, Win 5th Straight

CORPUS CHRISTI - Telvin Nash belted a two-run homer and Ruben Sosa and Tony Kemp combined for seven hits, three RBI's and three steals as Corpus Christi drilled Tulsa 7-2 Sunday at Whataburger Field before 4,759.

The Hooks, winners of five straight, improved to 9-8 in the Texas League second-half race, 43-44 overall. Tulsa fell to 7-10 and 45-41.

Brady Rodgers (4-9) won his third straight decision. The Richmond native twirled five shutout innings, scattering just two hits.

Despite a rocky sixth, Luis Cruz earned a four-inning save. He retired the last nine Drillers.

The Hooks attacked first with three unearned runs off Tyler Anderson (3-4). Carlos Perdomo reached on an error by third baseman Joey Wong and scored from first on Rene Garcia's double, plus an error charged to catcher Ryan Casteel. Casteel, upon contact with a sliding Perdomo, failed to maintain control of shortstop Trevor Story's relay. Consecutive triples by Sosa (deep center) and Kemp (right-field corner) gave the Hooks a 3-0 second-inning lead.

Sosa and Kemp teamed to make it 4-0 Hooks in the fourth. Sosa sparked a two-out uprising by singling to left and swiping second. Kemp followed with a single up the middle.
Anderson was finished after four frames, seven hits, a walk and strikeout.

Three straight one-out hits off Cruz pushed two Drillers home during the sixth. Taylor Featherston struck the payoff, a two-run double to deep center field.

Corpus Christi answered Tulsa and reliever RJ Siedel with zeal, Nash's 11th home run and his third in two games clanking off the cotton press just left of the scoreboard. The 437-foot blast came in the wake of Garcia's lead-off single. Sosa's second triple of the evening fronted a Delino DeShields sacrifice fly.

Hooks third baseman Jonathan Meyer saw his hitting streak end at nine games.

Ruben Alaniz (0-0) pitches for Corpus Christi Monday at 7:10 in the series and homestand finale vs. Richard Castillo (2-8). All fans enjoy $1 Hot Dogs and Soda, compliments of Mrs Baird's.
