Hooks Lose Another Heartbreaker, 5-4

MIDLAND - For a second consecutive game, the RockHounds erased a late Corpus Christi lead, scoring four times in the eighth Wednesday afternoon en route to a 5-4 win before 5,911 kids at Security Bank Ballpark.

With the Hooks up 4-1, Alex Sogard, working into his third inning, issued a lead-off walk to Blake Forsythe. One out later, Conner Crumbliss hit a soft ground ball to second that was mishandled by Joe Sclafani. Patrick Urckfitz (0-1) entered from the Hooks pen and induced a fly out from Colin Walsh. Because of the error, the inning continued for Anthony Aliotti who worked the second free pass of the frame. Jefry Marte followed with a three-run double down the left field line to tie the game at 4. On the next pitch, Max Muncy ripped a base hit past a diving MP Cokinos at first to put Midland (16-9) in font 5-4.

Seth Frankoff worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his fifth save of the season.

Corpus Christi (14-12) struck first with a four-run third. A Preston Tucker three-run homer down the right-field line highlighted the rally against Drew Granier. Granier bounced back by retiring eight of the next 10 batters.

Jeff Urlaub and Ryan Dull (3-0) held the Hooks to three hits and one walk thru three scoreless innings.

The result spoiled a fine start by Tommy Shirley, who tossed five innings of two-hit, one-run ball. Following a lead-off home run by Miles Head in the third, Shirley set down the last nine men he faced. The lefty fanned six and did not issue a walk, throwing 49 of 76 pitches for strikes.

Corpus Christi sends Brady Rodgers (1-2, 2.25) to the hill Thursday night. Midland counters with Shawn Haviland (0-1, 0.00) in the 7 p.m. start.
