Hooks Blank Missions 8-0

CORPUS CHRISTI - Matt Heidenreich and Brady Rodgers combined on an eight-hit shutout as Corpus Christi rolled the San Antonio Missions 8-0 Tuesday before 5,128 at Whataburger Field.

In taking three of four from their I-37 rivals, the Hooks improved to 17-15 in the first half of Texas League action. San Antonio is 13-18.

Heidenreich (1-0), traded to Houston from the White Sox almost two years ago in the Brett Myers deal, yielded six hits, walked one and struck out five over five innings before turning the game over to Rodgers. Rodgers, the Astros' third-round 2012 pick from Arizona State, earned a four-inning save. He allowed just two singles and whiffed six, including the side in the sixth.

Both clubs brewed first-inning trouble that came to naught. Robert Kral and Rymer Liriano singled with two away during Frisco's turn, but Jason Hagerty lined out to left. The Hooks had first-and-second with one gone, Nolan Fontana and Andrew Aplin aboard after singling. Aplin was picked off by catcher Austin Hedges and Matt Duffy bounced out to third.

Corpus Christi wouldn't be denied in the second, sending 10 men to bat in a five-run, four-hit uprising vs. Josh Geer. Fontana contributed a two-run double, Aplin a sacrifice fly and Rene Garcia an RBI single. Joe Sclafani coaxed a bases-loaded walk.

Preston Tucker and Tyler Heineman jump-started the flurry by singling an out apart.

Geer was on the ropes again in the fifth, but slipped out of a bases-loaded jam by getting Garcia to hit into a 1-2-3 double play.

Geer (1-4) worked five frames, permitted nine hits, walked two and struck out a pair in a 100-pitch outing (58 strikes).

The Hooks further separated in the eighth, Duffy ripping a two-out, bases-loaded triple into right-center off newly inserted Dennis O'Grady. Leonel Campos was charged with all three runs. He issued a lead-off walk to Garcia, Marc Wik's double and another free pass to Aplin.

Fontana, Aplin, Duffy, Tucker and Wik had two hits each. Liriano and Lee Orr posted two apiece for the visitors.

Heineman cleared the homestand with a 10-game hitting streak; Hedges has hit in seven straight, Duffy six.

The Hooks take Wednesday off before beginning a four-game series at Frisco. Corpus Christi returns to Whataburger Field May 16.
