Homeowner Worries About Roaring Traffic Down Ocean Drive

CORPUS CHRISTI - Residents living on Ocean Drive near Ennis Joslin say they're worried about the heavy traffic and numerous accidents that happen right outside their doors. One resident is going as far as to build a wall to protect his house from any unwanted vehicles.

Construction crews are building a 7-foot wall right along Ocean Drive in front of a home for protection.

"To keep people from wrecking or jumping the curb there in front of my house and ending up on my property I'm building a big wall there and I'm reinforcing it with rebar and concrete," Dr. Mario Martinez said.

Dr. Mario Martinez lives at the home and says The Texas Department of Transportation made changes to the traffic lights. Now, he and his next door neighbor see more wrecks at this intersection. Plus, Dr. Martinez says he has a tough time, safely getting on and off the road from his home.

"I have a difficult time getting onto my property, especially at about 6 o'clock when the classes are being let out of the University," he added.

TxDOT officials say they worked with the university, city and NAS-Corpus Christi on the project in September of last year. The idea was to have a continuous green, to keep traffic moving. Dr. Martinez says cars now fly down the street because of the 24-hour green light.

"One of the lanes coming from Ennis Joslin a green light while the far lane on the Ocean Drive side has a green light, so the both lanes have the right of way at the same time and it's causing a lot of accidents," Dr. Martinez added.

TxDOT says because of the growing university and a lot of traffic, from the base, the project was done to help the speed up the slow commute.

Regardless, Dr. Martinez is taking the extra step with his wall, hoping to be safe rather than sorry.
