Homeowner Rushes to Help Officers Wounded in Shootout

CORPUS CHRISTI - There's no official word from Corpus Christi PD on what lead up to an officer involved shooting this morning on Congressional Drive, but a homeowner thinks and attempted burglary at his house is connected.

The homeowner says the back door of his house was broken off the hinges. It's likely a dog scared off any intruder.

Around the same time, a police officer was called to check out multiple reports of a man seen acting erratically in the area.

Chief Floyd Simpson says one officer was already talking to the suspect when another pulled up to provide backup. The Chief says that's when the man pulled out a gun and shot both officers.

One officer was shot in the leg. The other was shot in the leg and chest. Both are expected to survive. A man who lives nearby tells KRIS 6 News he heard the gunshots and rushed to help. He used a belt as a tourniquet to stop the bleeding from an officer's leg. Another officer also had a tourniquet in his 'Go-Bag.'

The officers were able to shoot back at the man, hitting him in the chest. Chief Simpson tells us the man got into an officer's Chevy Tahoe and took off down Everhart Road.

He crashed into a utility pole in front of the Corpus Christi Country Club where officers dragged him out of the car and started treating him for injuries.

Medics rushed the suspect and both officers to the hospital.

Chief Floyd Simpson identified the officers involved in shooting as Michael Scott Goodman and Armando Gonzalez, both longtime officers. No identification provided on the critically wounded suspect.

Police have closed off Everhart Road between Shea Parkway and Saratoga Boulevard for the investigation.
