CORPUS CHRISTI - Traditionally the day after Christmas, you see a frenzy of shoppers buzzing back to stores making returns and exchanges. But more people seemed to be out shopping rather than returning.
Red reduction signs could be found all around stores as doors opened early the day after Christmas for shoppers. Best Buy's return line never had more than few people at a time... but look at the register lines and it was a different story.
"Returns do get pretty busy, right now it's kind of slow and its probably going to pick up a little bit and then maybe the lines will get a little bit longer," said Joey Davis at Best Buy.
Shoppers like Shelia Rollins started early this morning scoping out the sales
"I had scoped it out a couple of days before Christmas and knew what I wanted. so I came back for the sale," Rollins said.
Retailers are heavily discounting holiday items to boost sales after a disappointing Christmas shopping season. According to MasterCard, people spent less this year than expected.
" I try to get all my stuff ready for next year because I usually change my christmas tree to different ornaments so i take advantage of the 50 percent off," said shopper Margie Morales.
Morales wasn't alone, Wednesday many shoppers were snatching up clearance Christmas items like decorations and storage tubs for organizing.
"Most of the things for next year, wrapping paper, bags, everything is 50 percent off. you cant beat that," said Morales.
But despite Wednesday's slashed prices, stores say the number of day after Christmas shoppers didn't compare to last year, and attributed the cause locally to the cold snap.
Experts say weak holiday sales could have an effect on 2013, with the potential for retailers ordering less to restock their shelves and that could mean fewer good deals for customers.
