KINGSVILLE, Texas - The Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team swept Cameron winning 7-2 and 9-2 to end the Lone Star Conference series on Saturday. The sweep is the first of the season in conference play.
The LSC series sweep improves Kingsville's record to 10-7 and 5-3 in the LSC. Cameron is now 6-12, 1-7. The sweep was the first in LSC play since the Javelinas closed out the regular season with sweeps of Eastern New Mexico and Incarnate Word last year.
In the first game, Kingsville's James Black shocked the Aggies in the second and third inning when he sent a pair of home runs over the wall off of Cameron pitcher, Steve Matta. Black is the second Javelina to hit two home runs in a game this season. He would finish with five RBIs for the afternoon.
Other Javelinas that would drive in runs for the day were Blake Johnson in the second and Clint Wallace in the third.
Cameron would not get on the board until the sixth inning when Matt Nilmeyer singled to drive in Brandon Raidy. Codey McElroy hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Tobin Mateychic for a score of 7-2 to end the game.
Denver Diefenbach (3-1) took the win for A&M-Kingsville with a great performance only giving up two runs on two hits and seven strikeouts.
In the second game, the Javelinas got on the board first in the bottom of the first with two runs. Matt Perez doubled to drive in Derrick Walls. Justin Lee hit a sac fly to knock in Perez.
The Javelinas biggest run total came in the second inning with six runs and added one more in the fifth.
Johnson and Ryan Guedry combined to drive in four of the six runs in the fifth. Travis Laird added the Javelinas third home run of day in the fifth inning with a solo blast for his second for the season.
The Aggies struggled to score but eventually got on the boards with two runs in the sixth inning.
Kingsville finished the game with nine runs on 10 hits while only committing two errors. Laird led the Javelinas in hitting with three hits while Guedry had a pair.
Matt Rhodes (2-2) picked up the win for the Javelinas with six innings of work and allowed only two runs.
Jacob Winters (0-2) suffered the lost for the Aggies by giving up six runs with four earned on three hits.
