Hollinger's Late Bucket Pushes Hoggies To Win Over Toppers
AUSTIN, Texas - Irvin Hollinger scored on a lay in with eight seconds left to break a tie at 80 as the Texas A&M-Kingsville men's basketball earned its second straight win Tuesday night 82-80 over St. Edwards.
Hollinger's shot in the waning seconds came after Adonis Bailey had his shot blocked by John Rutherford. Kingsville maintained the possession and set up a final shot during a timeout with 14 seconds left.
With the win, the Javelinas improve to 2-2 on the year as they head into their first two home games of the season this weekend. Kingsville hosts the Emerald Beach Hotel Javelina Classic on Kingsville Hampton Inn Court. UT-Permian Basin, Texas A&M International and Cameron will join the Javelinas at the SPEC. Cameron will play International at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, while the Hoggies face UTPB at 5 p.m. On Saturday, Cameron will play the Falcons at 2:30, while the Javelinas will square off with the Dustdevils in the finale at 5 p.m.
Kingsville led the Hilltoppers (2-3) by as many as 10 points in the second half and led by eight, 76-68, with 4:34 after Jordan Jahr, who assisted the game-winning basket, converted a 3-point play.
The Toppers surged into the lead 79-78 with 1:32 remaining with an 11-2 run. Rutherford's three began the run, while Kingsville had turnovers on three of its next four possessions with a jumper by Ta'Quan McDew its lone points in the run.
Basey pushed the Javelinas back in front, 80-79, scoring on a layup with 81 seconds remaining after a defensive rebound by Hollinger.
James Stukes tied the game at 80 hitting 1-of-2 foul shots with 1:08 to go. Stukes was 10-of-12 from the line in the game.
Five Javelinas finished the game with double figures. Bailey led the way with 19 points, while Basey had 16 points to go with a team-best seven rebounds and five assists. McDew, who along with Bailey, hit three, 3-point baskets and finished with 15 points. Ronald Scott had 13 points before fouling out, while Jahr had 10. Hollinger, who had six points, had three steals.
Kingsville, which outscored the SEU bench 28-16, hit 23-of-32 foul shots for 71.9%, The Javelinas hit more free throws than the Hilltoppers attempted. St. Edward's was 12-of-20 from the line.
Stukes led the hosts with 22 points, while Harley Nussman had a double-double with 16 points and 11 boards. Ethan Gilbert had 12.
