CORPUS CHRISTI - The rates of HIV diagnoses are decreasing globally, and have already fallen by a third here in the United States.
However, the disease is by no means disappearing. AIDS researchers claim the keys to stopping the spread of the virus are both treatment and prevention.
"A lot of people think oh there's a vaccination for it now," said Amy Goldson with the Coastal Bend Wellness Center. "It's still a life-threatening disease, and there is no cure."
The UN said whatever action done within the next five years will determine what happens in the following 15. They released a report showing that the spread of the infection can actually be stopped by 2030, if both treatment and education increase.
Here in the Coastal Bend, experts said you can help stop the spread of the disease just by getting tested.
"You can be a carrier for quite some time without even knowing it," said Goldson. "And not only will you have to suffer with your own infection, but you'll also have to know of the guilt that possibly you spread that infection."
The Coastal Bend Wellness Center offers completely free HIV testing with no appointment necessary. You can find more information on that here.
