CORPUS CHRISTI - Police are looking for the driver who hit a 23-year-old girl while she was crossing the street, and then drove off. It happened around 1 a.m. New Years Day at Fig and Baldwin.

The victim, Amanda Arriola, is out of her hospital bed for the first time today, and thinks back to the fateful New Years morning when she was leaving her friends house to go home.

"I looked both ways before crossing the street. I looked left and I looked right, and then I just remember taking one or two steps, and then I don't remember after that. I remember waking up, and from my fingertips, it was all bloody," she says.

Luckily, her brother's friends saw the whole thing from across the street and rushed into the street to stop traffic and save her.

"They saved my life," Arriola says, "And I really thank them for that."

Arriola suffered multiple injuries including a broken leg and a gash to her head. Doctors had to put 10 stitches in her head.

She is stunned that the driver didn't even give it a second thought.

"How could they not stop after they hit somebody. Because I'm small, and you know, I could have died," she says.

She says comfort from her friends and family has gotten her through this, as well as a crucifix necklace her mother gave her.

She thought she lost necklace when she got hit, but somehow, the tiny object was found in the dark.

"I wore it that night, and I guess God saved me. And he, you know, he like, here, you can have it back," she said as she smiled.

To her, it felt like a sign that someone was watching over. And a sign of better things to come.

Police are looking for a blue 2001 Cadillac Deville. Anyone with information is encouraged to call 888-8847.
