Hit and Run Victim Speaks Out

CORPUS CHRISTI - Police are still looking for the person who hit a runner on Ocean Drive Saturday.

The runner, 34 year-old Joshua Newton, is still in severe pain but out of the hospital. He says what was scary about the whole situation is that the driver sped up right before hitting him.

"The only thing I remember from the entire thing was hearing the guy hit the gas. Was the acceleration of the engine as I was passing over his hood," said Newton.

After this Newton says he blacked out. His girlfriend, Jeri Fletcher, was on a bike right in front of him and says what she saw next scared her half to death.

"And then his head was on the roof of the car, then he projectiled up another 10 feet. Up and over, before he landed on the ground in a crumpled pile of mess," said Fletcher.

Newton ended up getting a few scrapes on his head and back, his shoulder was dislocated, and he tore his ACL. Newton says he is still in a lot of pain, but he isn't going to let this experience keep him from running again.

"I'm training for the New York marathon right now, and I have not decided to change my plans at all. As soon as I'm back in shape again, I'm back on the road again," said Newton.

Newton says he has no hard feelings against the person who did this, but does want them to take responsibly for their actions and turn themselves in. He also had one thing he wanted all drivers to remember while on the roads.

"There are other humans that are just flesh and bone walking the streets. And obviously the car generally always wins," said Newton.

Newton and his girlfriend say a white SUV is the vehicle that hit him. They say the vehicle would have damage to the hood, windshield, and roof. If you have any information on this hit and run call crime stoppers at 888-TIPS.
