CORPUS CHRISTI - Two weeks ago Harbor Playhouse officials turned to the community for help raising funds to replace their broken air conditioning units. The public stepped up and made enough money to cover the costs but after installation, repair workers discovered a new problem. Now, the playhouse is now back to square one and needs more help.
Carla Gardiner is the interim executive director at the Harbor Playhouse she explains that the issue needs to be addressed sooner rather than later.
"By the end of the summer we may have another problem on our hands," she said.
The problem is with the air flow.
"When we got the condensers installed on the roof, the company that was helping us out was looking at the air handler units and of course those are equally as old as the condensers were," Gardiner said.
Not to mention pretty expensive.
"Air handler issue, it'll be about 8,900 dollars is what we were quoted," she added.
Gardiner says the tough part about keeping up with repairs is finding the funding and even though the building is city owned, it's up to the playhouse volunteers to maintain.
"All the maintenance and repairs are on the organization to maintain, which is incredibly difficult this is a 20 thousand square foot facility, its huge and we're just trying to do what we can to keep it alive," Gardiner said.
Now, the non-profit organization is hoping for another miracle.
"It was incredible the community rallied around our plea for help, within 36 hours we had the condensers paid for," Gardiner said.
She is thankful for all of the community's tremendous efforts to raise enough money to replace the three old AC units. Gardiner emphasized the theaters goal, which is to keep performing arts alive for the coastal bend.
"We feel so strongly about performing arts and we recognize that its being cut in the schools all the time and we want to be an outlet for that," Gardiner said.
She is hopeful that the community will again see that the theater gets the TLC that it needs to remain a staple in the city.
