CORPUS CHRISTI - HEB announced late Friday evening that it will donate $15,000 to help send the families of the Universal Little League All Stars to be with the players at the World Series in Pennsylvania.
It's the latest in a series of community efforts by individuals and businesses to support the team.
HEB Spokesperson Regina Garcia-Posada said Friday evening that the team approached HEB a few days ago, inquiring about possible donations to support a corn roast fundraiser on Sunday.
The grocery chain rounded up $800 worth of gift cards to help with the corn roast.
The company later decided on its own to donate the $15,000.
Garcia said the money will be wired to the league's account Monday morning.
"We know this is a first in our community, and we want to be able to support the players and their families in reaching the World Series," said Garcia.
Friday afternoon, team officials had said they hoped to raise about $30,000, the amount they believed was necessary to cover the cost of transportation, lodging, and meals needed for the duration of the World Series tournament.
Earlier Friday, Church's Chicken donated $2,000, and Friday afternoon players with the Carroll High School baseball team collected donations from passing cars outside the school.
As of late Friday, it was unclear exactly how much had been raised altogether.
Several more fundraisers were scheduled for the weekend.
