Heated Debate For Re-naming of Robstown Elementary School

ROBSTOWN -- Members of the Robstown school board had a discussion tonight about changing the name of a brand new elementary school.
The current school board president claims the naming process was flawed.
Irma V. Romero Elementary School opened its doors in September.
It was named after a long time teacher who died of breast cancer.
Her husband, Osvaldo Romero, who's still on the school board, was board president last year.
He picked the members of the committee that chose the school's name.
The current board president says the entire board should have selected those committee members, not just Romero.
People who went to this meeting called the accusations -- made by board members -- down-right embarrassing.
It all started when the issue of re-naming -- Irma V. Romero Elementary to Robert Driscoll, Junior Elementary -- came up.
When discussing where the money will come from to change signs and logos with the school's new name, board members Osvaldo Romero and Eva Orona accused each other of not following board policy.
Romero says some of the board members -- want to throw away $10,000 of tax payer's money -- on making name changes and they didn't even give the tax payers a chance to help with the renaming.
So he offered a suggestion..."Well I'm going to challenge you to let the community decide we've got an election this coming May. It'll cost about $8000 for a referendum. I'll be glad to foot the bill with regards to that. Let the community decide."
Board members didn't really respond to his suggestion and Orona said the board already voted on the change and it's a done deal.
Orona said, "This board has the authority to name a school. I stated at the last meeting we have a very vague policy. We need to revisit our board needs, to revisit all our policies."
So, the new name of this school will be Robert Driscoll, Junior.
Board members didn't know how soon the changes at the school will take place, but they hope it gets done this year.
