CORPUS CHRISTI - The City-County Health Department shut down some of the pools at the Natatorium after we asked inspectors to look into whether they were safe.
KRIS 6 News' Edna Cortinas first addressed the issue on our Sunrise show. She met with city health inspectors at the Natatorium just after noon to discuss how they inspect our city pools.
They took several test samples from all three pools, but it was the dive pool and the lap pool where the results caused concern.
"We tested that middle pool and it's hardly got any chlorine at all in it... it's non existent, so if you cannot let anybody swim in there until you guys get the chlorine levels up on that one," an inspector told the staff.
It's one of the city's busiest pools. Two inspectors found low levels of chlorine and bromine in each pool. Those chemicals are needed to kill bacteria people bring into the pool.
They also found the pump that filters both pools wasn't working and missing a part. So, they immediately shut them down which came as a surprise to everyone.
"It's very important because lives are at stake here. I mean you have a lot of people in the water and heaven forbid you wouldn't want something to happen to them, so it's very, very important," said inspector Manuel Garza.
Health inspectors say keeping pools at the correct levels is very important because bacteria can cause ear infections, stomach issues, and other health problems.
Both pools were re-opened after a technician started manually adding chlorine to the pool and testing the water every two hours. Meanwhile health inspectors plan to come back out here tomorrow morning to test the pools again.
