CORPUS CHRISTI - Two women are in the hospital, after a terrible head on crash sent one of the cars into the Laguna Madre.
Police say a Toyota 4 Runner veered across Laguna Shores Road and as the driver tried over-corrected, she smashed into a black Mercedes.
"The vehicle came back onto the roadway and then came back across the roadway and struck the other vehicle head on," an officer said.
Then, the white SUV went up in flames, while the black Mercedes Benz ended up in the Laguna Madre, both female drivers were injured with possible broken legs according to police.
Officers say given the severity of the damage to both of the vehicles, both drivers are lucky to only have suffered minor injuries.
Meanwhile, a witness told police he helped pull the driver of the SUV out of the burning car. When medics arrived, the two women were taken to the hospital.
Police say they're looking into whether the driver of the Toyota was distracted because they don't believe she was speeding.
"There's no skid marks on either side and the impact from that speed is going to be tremendous anyway," an officer said.
Crews shut down Laguna Shores for about an hour until they could clear up the scene and clean up oil on the roadway. At this point, no one has been cited in this accident.
