NUECES COUNTY - 3 people are dead tonight after a head on collision on FM 70, outside Bishop. Investigators are now saying they aren't exactly sure how the accident happened.

Two people were flown to Spohn Memorial Hospital after a major accident around 11:30 Friday morning.

But those weren't the only casualties. 3 people died at the scene after DPS Troopers say this black SUV was travelling Westbound on FM 70.

At first Troopers told us this black truck ran off the road, then came back on, headed straight for the SUV. The driver of the SUV tried to dodge the oncoming truck, but wasn't able to, the two vehicles slammed, headfirst into each other, killing the drivers and a passenger in the pickup truck.

But since then, Troopers have told us that they now aren't sure what caused the accident.

The mangled metal and twisted car parts that litter the scene, need to be removed so that investigators can get a closer look at the tire tracks to try and figure out what happened.

I'm told all 5 people who were involved in the crash are from the Rio Grand Valley area, from cities like Weslaco, Mercedes and Pharr Texas.

We're still not sure where they were headed, but Troopers closed down sections of the road, so that they can look at the evidence and determine who exactly was at fault.

As for those who were transported to the hospital, no word yet on their conditions, or whether or not they are awake enough to tell investigators what happened.

DPS later released the names of the deceased. The driver of truck was 60 year old, Jose Luis Hernandez of Weslaco, Texas. His passenger, 42 year old, Santiago Granados Junior of Mercedes, Texas, and the driver of Mazda 26 year old, Efrain Gomez Junior of Pharr, Texas.
