MCALLEN - The head of a human smuggling ring that since 2001 moved hundreds of illegal immigrants through South Texas to Houston has been sentenced to 12½ years in prison.

Investigators say 46-year-old Jose Aguirre-Nunez in 2007 pleaded guilty to conspiracy to transport illegal immigrants and conspiracy to commit money laundering. Prosecutors on Tuesday announced his sentencing in McAllen.

Border Patrol agents on June 30, 2005, discovered more than two dozen immigrants from Honduras and El Salvador at a stash house in Roma. Agents days earlier found two immigrants wandering in the brush near Falfurrias who said a woman with them died. The trio ran out of water.

The investigation led to the husband of the deceased female who had a deal with Aguirre-Nunez to transport his wife from Honduras to Houston.
