CORPUS CHRISTI - The Nueces County Health Department arrived at Salazar Elementary School Wednesday morning with more than 500 doses of the Swine Flu vaccine.

"We moved fast and quickly to protect our students as best as we know how against the influenza that is threatening the safety of our children," said Phyllis Castro, Robstown ISD nurse.

The children's loved ones are relieved the health department is offering aid.

"Well there's just so much going on right now, and we just want to have her protected, you know, just in case," said Grandmother Cindy Gonzalez.

The county selected Robstown in part because of an unusually high number of students missing school because of illness.

"Robstown, as many of the other districts has suffered some of the absences due to flu like symptoms," said Castro.

Students lined up all morning to receive a tiny syringe filled with two doses of the vaccination, which is something parents hope will keep their children safe this flu season.

Public health officials wanted young children, the biggest carriers of germs, to get the vaccine.

"A clinic, such as this one brought directly to the children, is important because our parents are very busy, we all are, and they go about their business and jobs and the children are here. If the vaccine comes to them and if we give it to them it's a much more complete process," said Castro.

The state is covering the cost of the vaccination, making it even more accessible to families.
