H-E-B Donates 145,000 Bowls of Cereal to Food Bank of Corpus Christi

CORPUS CHRISTI -- The Food Bank of Corpus Christi stays busy year round, helping feed families in need. This year they've seen a 30% increase in families seeking help, and today H-E-B made a $16,000 donation.
Box by box, crews at the Food Bank of Corpus Christi unloaded quite a generous donation; an entire truckload of H-E-B Corn Flakes.
"They surprised us this morning with a truck load of Corn Flakes," said Bea Hanson Executive Director at the Corpus Christi Food Bank.
The cereal is worth about $16,500, but for the families who need it, this food is priceless. "You can see in their faces that oh my gosh, this makes such a difference," said Hanson.
They're faces we don't often see, but hanson tells us they offer help to people and families of all ages here in the Coastal Bend.
"Mostly the elderly a lot of people that live on fixed incomes, a lot of people that receive food stamps, but the food stamps don't last the whole month, a lot of people that have lost their jobs and it's the first time they have to ask for assistance and they are embarrassed," said Hanson.
Even with a donation as significant as this one, it should make about 145,000 bowls of cereal, Hanson says it will only last on their shelves about two weeks. "The need is up and that's why we have felt that any donation such as this one, really helps us make and impact and fulfill the need," said Hanson.
It's a need she says even you can help fulfill. The food bank is always taking donations and every dollar makes a difference.
"One dollar provides seven meals to a family, that's how we can stretch a dollar," Hanson said.
If you can't donate money, they are also in short supply of canned goods right now.
