AUSTIN, Texas - Some small law enforcement agencies in Texas say a rising demand for assault weapons and other guns is making it difficult for them to buy their own.
The Austin American-Statesman reports that police departments in Round Rock, Rollingwood and elsewhere are seeing months-long delays on tactical rifles. Rollingwood Chief Dayne Pryor tells the newspaper that he blames "panic buying" for the shortage.
While many vendors say they give priority on sales to the military and law enforcement, guns often sell for higher prices on retail.
Pryor says he's considering cutting back on range time for officers to save bullets. And Pflugerville police have asked officers to conserve ammunition whenever possible.
