CORPUS CHRISTI - When is a playground more than just a playground? When it brings together more than 250 volunteers whose goal is to transform children from sedentary, bored and solitary to physically, mentally and socially active.
Saturday, May 17th, members of St. Paul United Methodist Church on the city's north side will join forces with two organizations - Strike and KaBoom! - to spend the day building a new community playground. It will be constructed at the church building, which is located at 1202 Sam Rankin Drive. It is made by possible, in part, by a grant from Strike, a leading energy services provider.
St. Paul UMC has served the community for 130 years, and is located in what has been described as a "playground-deprived" neighborhood. Leaders of the church believe that building the new playground will be just one more way to serve their neighbors, as the children in this area currently have no accessible playspaces. It is being built with the hope that the community playground will bring more than 1,000 Corpus Christi children one step closer to having an active childhood, making the neighborhood a healthier and happier place. The design of the playground is based on children's drawings created at a special design event that happened in March.
The one-day construction event will begin with a Kick-Off Ceremony at 8:30 AM and end with a Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony at 2:30 PM. Visit www.saintpaulunitedmethodist.org for more information about the project.
