CORPUS CHRISTI - Former Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball pitcher Greta Cecchetti has been selected to play with the Italian National Team at the 2012 ISF XIII Women's World Fastpitch Championships in Canada starting in July.

"I am really excited about this," Cecchetti said. "It's going to be a great experience."

Along with Italy, 15 other countries have qualified to compete in the 10-day tournament: Argentina, Australia, Canada, China, Chinese Taipei, Czech Republic, Great Britain, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, South Africa, U.S. and Venezuela.

The Americans are the defending champions after winning the 2010 tournament in Caracas, Vanezuela. Japan took silver while Canada took bronze.

"What a great honor for Greta to be named to the Italian National Team," Islanders head coach Stephanie Hughes said. "It is the ultimate honor for an athlete to play for their country and I know that her teammates, coaches, and fellow Islanders are proud to say she was a part of this softball program and our university. We wish her all the luck."

Last summer in the European Softball Championships, Cecchetti and Team Italy were masterful as they advanced to the finals to qualify for the World Championships, with Cecchetti going a perfect 4-0 in the circle. In her first appearance in the tournament against Sweden, she pitched two innings while allowing just one hit and striking out one batter. Cecchetti followed that performance by picking up her second victory, striking out three batters and combining with the starting pitcher to throw a four-inning no-hitter against Croatia. Against Spain, she tossed a four-inning perfect game to advance her team into the quarterfinals. She started the game and struck out four batters without allowing a hit or a walk. Cecchetti picked up her fourth victory to lead Team Italy into the semifinals. She pitched four innings, giving up one unearned run on four hits while striking out six batters and walking none.

As a senior, Cecchetti led the Islanders in the circle with an impressive 1.86 ERA, including a 0.53 ERA in the Southland Conference. The senior powered the team with 123 strikeouts in a team-high 109.1 innings. Cecchetti was named the Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week during the week of March 26 and was named Second Team All-Southland Conference. She recently earned Southland Conference Second Team All-Academic honors.
