CORPUS CHRISTI - The Sonic restaurant on Ayers Street is being threatened with a daily fine if it doesn't immediately clean-up a grease leak. The leak was noticed by a man who slipped and fell last night.
Troy Hankins says he was visiting his daughter last night when he slipped on what he thought was water, but it turned out to be grease from the Sonic right down the street.
"I came around the back of the Jeep, right there is where my foot slipped, and right there is where I fell," said Hankins.
It turns out the fast food restaurant's oil container overflowed. The oil then ran down the trench and into the street.
"I still can't believe there is oil four houses down, and they have to know that it's happening," said Hankins.
But the manager claimed to have no knowlege of the mess.
"That the first time I've seen this. You know this was brought to my attention today," said Sonic Manager Raul Contreras.
Contreras says he will work to resolve the problem.
"You know it is our responsibility because it's coming out of our dumpster, you know, so it is our responsibility to get this mess cleaned up," said Contreras.
Meanwhile, Hankins tells us his shoulder is still sore from the fall. The nighttime manager gave him a coupon for his troubles.
City officials tell us situations like this have to be cleaned up as soon as possible. They don't want oils getting into the storm drains.
So Sonic has to clean it all up by the end of today. If they don't, they could be fined $2,000 a day.
