CORPUS CHRISTI - Bystanders help stop two women from stealing a car outside a southside convenience store. The owner of a newer model Mercedes left her car running when she got out to fill up the tank.
That's when one of the thieves jumped behind the wheel and took off, but she didn't go very far. First, she stopped to pick up her accomplice still in the parking lot.
An off-duty emergency official and another customer immediately stepped up to help out, with each confronting the driver and passenger.
While the driver was kept on the property, the passenger was able to escape and run to a nearby store.
It's our understanding she may have tricked someone into giving her a ride by claiming she was trying to escape an abusive boyfriend.
Police caught up with the woman on the other side of town. They're still trying to work out if the man who gave her a ride was just another good samaritan caught up in middle.
As for the woman who started this all by jumping into the Mercedes, police say she may be behind several similar crimes within the past week.
Officials have not released the names of either woman.
