Girl Smells Smoke, Saves Family from Fire

CORPUS CHRISTI - A girl helped get everyone out of a multi-family home this morning as smoke filled up the building.

She was the first to smell smoke before dawn at the home on Fig Street. "I ran up to my parents' room, woke up my little sister and my mom and dad. I told them there was smoke, to get out of the house," Miracle Mauk told us.

Some of the tenants tried to put the fire out themselves, but called 9-1-1 when the efforts failed.

A firefighter was overcome by heat exhaustion at the scene. No one else was injured.

One unit at the home was gutted by the flames, two others sustained heavy smoke damage.
