CORPUS CHRISTI - "Panic city" is how drivers were describing the scene on SPID tonight. "It was a hole in the road and the concrete came out of it and everybody was hitting it," said Janice Larson, one of the drivers.
About a dozen drivers are in shock. Police say the section of cement connecting the overpass to the rest of the highway just broke apart leaving cement chunks on SPID and a giant pothole about four feet wide and a foot deep right in the middle of the road.
"I had no idea what was going on," said Donna Stewart. "I didn't even know what we hit and I'm still not real sure. I was told we did hit concrete."
Janice Larson said, "Everyone started lining up with their flashers on."
By that time police came and shortly later the wreckers. Tow trucks brought the drivers and their damaged vehicles to a parking lot along SPID near Greenwood to survey the damage.
"A real disaster," said Larson. "People driving by were probably wondering, 'what the heck is going on?'"
Although the parking lot was full of damaged vehicles, no one was hurt. TxDOT repaired the damages; as for how it all happened in the first place, officials are not quite sure.
