SAN PATRICIO COUNTY - The San Patricio County Sheriff's Office and Texas State Troopers arrested 10 people Friday night on charges of operating illegal gambling establishments in towns across the county.
The raids at Golden City, Jack's Palace, Silver Gameroom, Pot O'Gold, Lap of Luxury, Diamonds, Gameworks and Monte Carlo resulted in the seizure of hundreds of machines and an undisclosed amount of cash.
Sheriff Leroy Moody says other game rooms may have been tipped off about the simultaneous raids at 6:30 p.m. because they were coincidentally closed for business that evening.
Earlier this year, the sheriff warned the game rooms to shut down if they were breaking the law by giving out cash prizes. Many did close, only to reopen within weeks.
"We had to work undercover cause most have gone to membership cards. You have to have one for them to let you in so they keep doors locked and only let you in if you have a card," said Sheriff Moody.
For now, authorities are leaving the gaming machines in the businesses as they look towards taking further action against the owners.
The following are all charged with engaging in organized criminal activity, possession of a gambling device, keeping a gambling place, and gambling promotion:
