CORPUS CHRISTI - Blazing flames woke up two families Monday morning. Kerry Williams says she heard a popping noise and woke up to see flames in her kitchen window. That's when she woke up her 3 and 6 year old granddaughters, and her daughter. The four made it outside safely just as fire crews and her neighbor former Corpus Christi officer, Ken Starrs, began knocking on their doors to make sure they got out safely.
"I will tell you this, before they left Ken came to my house and knocked on my door to make sure we were aware that there was a fire. So, he was always thinking of someone other than himself," said Williams.
"That's the type of person he is," said long time friend of Ken's Rocky Odom.
Starrs was a Capitan for CCPD for 26 years. And the neighbors and friends say that experience shows, especially in situations like Monday morning.
While he helped get his neighbors out safe and sound him and his wife ended up in the hospital. He was taken to Spohn Memorial due to smoke inhalation and his wife, Karen, is at Brook Army Medical Center in San Antonio with serious burns. Odom says he talked to Ken on the phone earlier and tells me he doesn't care about his material things but is asking for prayers for his wife.
"This is stuff you know? He can replace stuff, but you can't replace your wife," said Odom.
Starrs says his wife is still at Brook Army with second to third degree burns on the upper part of her body. He says she is sedated right now but will go into surgery Thursday.
