Everyone is invited to join us at Minute Maid Park on November 11, 2013 when Occidental Petroleum presents a FREE Veterans Day event to honor our nation's military and veterans, with a special thanks to those who served in WWII.
Hosted by the Houston Astros and the Texas DAR, this family-friendly event includes free musical entertainment and video board screening of the award winning documentary Honor Flight: One Last Mission. Featured entertainers include Gary Morris and Tracy Byrd. Honor Flight: One Last Mission, is a heartwarming documentary about four living World War II veterans and a Midwest community coming together to give them the trip of a lifetime. Volunteers race against the clock to fly thousands of WW II veterans to Washington D.C. to see the memorial constructed for them in 2004. The trips are called "Honor Flights" and for the veterans who are in their late 80's and early 90's, it is often the last rip of their lives. The 24-hour journey is full of surprises that deeply move all who are involved. Many veterans say: "With the exception of their wedding day and the birth of their children, the trip is the best day of their life" - http://www.honorflighthouston.org/.
The feature-length documentary about the Honor Flight program, featuring veterans recounting their war stories and taking the trip to Washington, has attracted attention around the country. Locally, the Lone Star Honor Flight, which originated in Montgomery County, ended their flights in 2011, due to the frailty of the vets and their dwindling numbers. Gates will open at 11:00 and Free Entertainment is at 11:30am. Concessions are available. The program honoring our veterans will be at 2:00pm and the closing ceremonies at 4:30pm. Please obtain your FREE tickets by visiting www.astros.com/vets . Tickets must be requested by November 1 to be mailed.
