SAN ANTONIO (AP) - A former Air Force trainer in Texas has been sentenced to three months in prison in a sex and assault scandal in which some recruits had to fill their canteens with toilet water.
Staff Sgt. Ryan Deraas reached a plea agreement Monday at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland on eight counts.
Deraas pleaded guilty to mistreatment of basic trainees, to five specifications of unprofessional relationships with students and to two specifications of assault.
Deraas says he had sex with one female trainee and pursued relationships with several others. He refused bathroom breaks for some trainees and deprived them of drinking water - ordering them instead to use toilet water.
Eight other former Lackland instructors convicted in the scandal have been sentenced to prison or to no confinement but hard labor.
