VICTORIA - University of Houston-Victoria sophomore Vance Edwards was a model of consistency Tuesday posting two rounds under par en route to becoming the first UHV golfer to earn a qualifying berth to the NAIA National golf Championships.
Edwards posted a 54-hole total of 3-under par to capture individual medalist honors at his home course at the Association of Independent Institutions Conference Men's Golf Championships.
The King graduate opened play Monday with an even-par 72 before heavy rains washed out the second round, forcing the field to play a grueling 36-hole finale on Tuesday. Edwards went out and posted a 2-under 70 at Victoria Country Club and then closed with a 1-under 71 to claim individual honors by two shots.
Following Edwards for UHV, Colton Martin finished at 80-77-75-232, William Truss at 78-81-77-236 and William Drew-Hicks at 91-83-84. Jones finished with rounds of 72-76. Jesse Acosta, playing as a medalist for UHV, posted rounds of 85-83-79-247.
Edwards now advances to the 62nd annual NAIA National Championships to be played May 14-17 at Creekside Golf Club in Salem, Oregon.
