MCALLEN - Two former Duval County deputies have been sentenced to federal prison for their role in a conspiracy to smuggle cocaine into the country.
Victor Carrillo of Benavides was sentenced to nearly six years in prison. Ruben Silva of Freer was hit with a sentence of nearly nine years in prison.
Back in August, both men plead guilty to drug conspiracy charges. They admitted stealing ten kilos of cocaine from drug smugglers during phony traffic stops. The cocaine was transported in their county issued patrol cars and handed over to drug dealers for a fee of thousands of dollars each.
The scheme fell apart when the man who arranged everything was busted in an undercover federal sting.
