CORPUS CHRISTI -- Former meteorologist Phil Sokolov worked with anchorman Walter Furley at KZTV for more than two decades. When Furley, 84, died Wednesday after a bout with cancer, Sokolov said he lost not only a friend, but also a father figure.
"It's a loss, not just for me, but for any Corpus Christi resident whose ever been there for the last 45 years," he said. "He has always been a treasure...a true, true pioneer."
Sokolov, who sat next to Furley on the anchor desk during Furley's final broadcast in May 2002, said Furley was more than just and colleague and friend - he was a second father. "To me, he's been my second dad."
Sokolov, who left the business shortly after Furley retired, said he and Furley spoke on the phone occasionally, but regularly exchanged emails.
"I could guarantee you that anybody that worked with him, under him or anybody with the station behind-the-scenes - [it's] Walter Furley's memory that every last person will never forget."
As Furley signed off telling viewers one last time to "stay tuned for the Bold and the Beautiful," Sokolov helped Furley finish his sentence as Furley choked up.
